GRAFTING RESIDENCIES

ABOUT

Are you a writer, maker, movement artist, or seeker in need of developing your work and practice and are interested in developing skills in manual labour within community?

The Grafting Residencies are a meeting point between manual craft and artistic practice. Each residency has a devoted research enquiry, oscillating between construction, land-work, building and the imaginative and embodied research of the artist.

In March 2024, ‘Heart of Stone’, the first ever Grafting Residency focussed on exploring the material of stone physically, metaphorically and expressively. The group worked together to bring down an old stone building, carefully organising and redistributing the stone across the site. Alongside the manual work, participants met every morning and early evening in the studio to explore the book ‘Iron John’ by Robert Bly, opening conversations and expressively exploring what it is to be a man in this time.

FAQ

  • Where will the residency take place?
The residency will take place at Aercwel Mill, a creative centre situated in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. Aercwel Mill offers a nurturing environment for artists and makers seeking to create meaningful and transformative work. The site, built on principles of community, shared practice, and focussed research, comprises a red sandstone cottage, a former fulling mill building, two ruins, and nearly an acre of land. The surrounding forests provide spaces for reflection, personal dreaming, and idea development, making it an ideal location to create a nurtured space for creative work.
  • What does a residency curated in collaboration with you mean?
A curated residency in collaboration with us means that we work closely with you to tailor the residency experience to your specific needs and artistic goals.
  • How much does it all cost?
The costs for the solo residency vary based on the duration, season and your specific needs. Please contact us for more information.
  • Are there any bursary places available?
While we are working to establish funding for bursary places, they are not currently available. However, we offer an opportunity for solo residencies to happen partially through exchange, with artists in residency working alongside us to develop the Aercwel Mill site. These exchanges involve working on the land and in exchange receiving access to the studio space alongside creative mentorship.
